She missed her train. He missed his chance.

Title: The Missed Train Series: Moments in the City — Story 1
The train doors slid shut right in front of her.
“No, no, no—wait!” she shouted, tapping the glass.
The train didn’t care. It pulled away, leaving her standing on the platform with her bag, her coffee, and her frustration.
She closed her eyes and groaned. “Great. First meeting of the day and I’m already late.”
Someone beside her chuckled.
She opened her eyes and saw him — tall, clean‑cut, wearing a navy blue button‑down and holding a paper cup from the café upstairs.
“You okay?” he asked, voice warm and calm.
She sighed. “I missed my train. And my boss is going to murder me.”
He nodded sympathetically. “I get it. I missed mine too.”
She raised an eyebrow. “You don’t look stressed.”
He shrugged. “I’m not. Missing the train isn’t the worst thing that could happen.”
She blinked. “Wow. Must be nice to be that zen.”
He laughed. “Not zen. Just… realistic. Sometimes the universe slows us down for a reason.”
She rolled her eyes playfully. “Are you always this philosophical at 7:42 AM?”
“Only when talking to strangers who look like they need cheering up.”
She felt her cheeks warm.
He extended a hand. “I’m Lucas.”
She hesitated, then shook it. “Aria.”
“Nice to meet you, Aria-who-missed-her-train.”
She laughed — a small, surprised laugh that made Lucas smile wider.
They sat on the bench together, waiting for the next train.
“So,” he said, “what’s the big meeting about?”
She groaned. “A presentation. My first one. And I’m terrified.”
Lucas nodded. “Want a tip?”
“Sure.”
“Pretend everyone in the room already likes you.”
She blinked. “That’s… oddly comforting.”
“It works,” he said. “I do it all the time.”
“You present a lot?”
“Every week.”
She stared at him. “What do you do?”
He opened his mouth to answer — but the next train arrived, loud and sudden.
People rushed in.
Lucas stepped aside, letting her board first.
“Good luck, Aria,” he said. “You’ll do great.”
She smiled. “Thanks, Lucas.”
The doors began to close.
She panicked. “Wait—will I see you again?”
He grinned. “Probably. I take this train every day.”
The doors shut.
Aria stood there, heart pounding, staring at him through the glass as the train pulled away.
Lucas raised his coffee cup in a small salute.
She smiled.
Maybe missing the train wasn’t the worst thing after all.
