Title: The Last Bus Home
Series: Moments in the City — Story 9
The bus station at 11:08 PM was quiet — too quiet.
Lena checked the schedule again, hoping she’d misread it.
She hadn’t.
The last bus had left two minutes ago.
She groaned softly.
“Perfect. Just perfect.”
Her phone was at 3%.
Her wallet had only enough cash for the bus fare.
And the night air was getting colder by the minute.
She sat on the bench, hugging her bag, trying not to panic.
Then footsteps approached.
A guy jogged toward the station, breathless, hair messy from running.
“Please tell me I didn’t miss it,” he said.
Lena winced.
“You did.”
He stopped.
“Seriously?”
“Seriously.”
He sighed and sat on the opposite end of the bench.
“Well… that’s my karma for leaving work late.”
Lena glanced at him.
“You too?”
He nodded.
“Yeah. I’m Leo.”
“Lena.”
He smiled.
“Nice to meet you, Lena‑who‑also‑missed-the-bus.”
She rolled her eyes.
“Why does everyone say that to me?”
He laughed.
“Maybe you look like someone who needs a break.”
She blinked.
“That’s… surprisingly accurate.”
⭐ THE WAIT
The station lights flickered softly, casting a warm glow over the empty platform.
Leo leaned back.
“So… what now?”
Lena shrugged.
“Wait for a miracle?”
He grinned.
“Or… we could wait for the midnight shuttle.”
Her eyes widened.
“There’s a midnight shuttle?”
“Yeah. It’s not on the main schedule. Only locals know about it.”
She stared at him.
“Are you sure you’re not making that up?”
He raised a hand.
“Promise. I take it all the time.”
She relaxed a little.
“Okay,” she said. “Midnight shuttle it is.”
They had fifty minutes to kill.
⭐ THE CONVERSATION
They talked.
Not the small talk kind —
the real kind.
About work.
About stress.
About the city.
About how exhausting adulthood was.
At one point, Lena said:
“I feel like I’m always running after something. A deadline. A bus. A life I’m not even sure I want.”
Leo nodded slowly.
“I get that. I feel that every day.”
She looked at him — really looked — and saw the tiredness behind his smile.
“You seem like someone who has it together,” she said.
He laughed.
“Oh no. I’m barely surviving. I just hide it well.”
She smiled softly.
“Same.”
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment.
Then Leo said:
“You know… I’m glad I missed the bus.”
Lena blinked.
“Why?”
He looked at her, eyes warm.
“Because I wouldn’t be here talking to you.”
Her breath caught.
⭐ THE ALMOST‑MOMENT
A breeze swept through the station, making Lena shiver.
Leo noticed immediately.
“Here,” he said, shrugging off his hoodie. “Take it.”
She shook her head.
“No, no, you’ll get cold.”
“I’m fine,” he said. “You’re freezing.”
She hesitated.
He smiled.
“Please?”
She finally accepted it, pulling it around her shoulders.
It smelled like laundry soap and something warm she couldn’t name.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
Leo looked away, cheeks slightly pink.
“Anytime.”
⭐ THE SHUTTLE ARRIVES
At exactly midnight, headlights appeared down the road.
Lena stood.
“That’s it?”
Leo nodded.
“Told you.”
They boarded the shuttle — only a few passengers inside.
Lena sat by the window.
Leo sat beside her.
As the shuttle pulled away, she turned to him.
“Leo?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you… for staying with me.”
He smiled — soft, genuine.
“Thank you for talking to me.”
She hesitated, then said:
“Maybe we’ll see each other again?”
He grinned.
“Oh, we will. I take this route every night.”
She laughed.
“Then I guess… see you tomorrow?”
“See you tomorrow, Lena.”
The shuttle rolled through the quiet city streets,
and for the first time in a long time,
Lena didn’t feel alone.
