TEASER:

Pinakita si Sir Chief na may dalang balloons tapos nasa restaurant sila ni Maya. Tinanong ni SC yung waitress about their orders (packed food for the house party) tapos sabi ng waitress eh malapit na daw matapos.

Next scene, pinakita na may couple sa isang table then sila Maya and SC nakaupo din sa isang table. Sabi ni Maya “Sir Chief, magppropose na po ata oh” (with the kilig face). Sabi ni SC, “you’re smiling like you’re on a date yourself”. Sabi ni Maya “Po?” Aligaga naman si SC sabi niya “this isn’t a date di ba? Kasi kung date ito, dapat may flowers” then parang flashback na binigyan niya si Maya ng flower (the one we saw sa picture na pinost dito) Tapos sabi ulit ni SC “dapat sinundo ka..” flashback ulit yung scene na pagsundo ni SC kay Maya tapos sabi ni SC “dapat may chocolates..” then pinakita na may inabot si SC na heart shaped na chocolates ang laman. (nawawalan na ako ng oxygen at this point)

 

Last scene, pinakita sila SC na nasa daan na ata tapos sabi ni Maya na mukhang may party daw, baka ma-stuck daw sila doon. Yun pala parang lovapalooza where couples kiss tapos countdown na yung host then the couples there kissed. Nahiya si Maya kasi nasa loob sila nung kotse tapos lahat nagkikiss sa labas. Tapos may Kumatok sa bintana ni Maya at sabay sabing “MAG-KISS NA RIN KAYO” Si Maya naman hiyang-hiya na at nagtakip ng kamay niya sa mukha tapos si SC pinakita na sobrang kilig sa pagkangiti at parang gusto nang halikan si Maya.

 

 

GRABE NA TALAGA SI SC!!! Sobrang indirect pero HALATANG-HALATA na nagpapahaging kay Maya. AS IN!!! Parang he did all those things kasi para magets ni Maya na date na yuuun! OMAYGALIGEEEEEE!!!Yung itsura niya pa sa dulo, parang gustong-gusto na halikan si Maya!!!

Bukod sa damoves ni SC ang pagsama nya kay Maya para umorder ng food, I think it also shows how dependent he is on Maya.Na ultimong pagkain para sa pamilya nya, kailangan nyang i-consult kay Maya.Hang- sweet lang! Asawang-asawa na ang turing nya kay Maya, hindi pa man sya nagtatapat!

Then the “awkward” things took place nung they have to wait for their order to be done completely.

Yun na…si Ricardo – “This isn’t a date, right?” “kasi kung date to, you should have flowers…dapat sunduin ka…dapat may chocolates!”-addressing Maya to that effect… ang kaso…all his actions prior to that clarification boil to the reality – that what they had that night was indeed a “date”
Nung sinabi nya na “dapat may flowers”, naisip nya, “ay nagbigay pala ko, next” sabi nya “dapat sinundo ka” e naisip din nya na oo nga pala sinundo nya si Maya. Tapos next one naman “dapat may chocolate”, bokya din kasi binigyan pala nya ng chocolate si Maya.
Sa tingin ko, nung i-enumerate ni SC ang mga ginagawa pag nagdedate, yung tono nya parang kinukumbinsi nya ang sarili nya na hindi sila nagdate.
Parang nagpaparinig na itong si SC kay Maya. Yung parang nag-enumerate siya tapos at the end of the episode eh ipapakita si Maya na irerecall niya yung criteria ni SC for a date tapos maiisip niyang isang malaking CHECK lahat ng mga yun!

 

Kung ako kay Maya… hindi na makaka second date itong si Richard! Kahit ba may take out pwede naman mag order habang waiting pa…eh siya ang inorder-TUBIG!
Buti nakahalata kahit paano… ninenok yung garlic bread ni Mr. Kim! di ba ang garlic bread dapat partner ng pasta?? tapos parang ang konti pa nung take out! parang kasya lang sa kanila ni Maya! eh ang dami kayang tao sa mansyon???

ABS-CBN to pit ‘Be Careful’ against noontime variety shows? 

NOW when we hear about television shows these days, none out there could be greater than the success of ABS-CBN’s “Be Careful With My Heart.”

ABS-CBN had recently moved it to a later timeslot to give fans more time to watch the show placing it before ABS-CBN’s noontime variety show, “It’s Showtime” which has also been ranking up in the ratings game these days.

 

But rumor says that the Richard Yap and Jodi Sta. Maria’s show is soon to occupy the timeslot of said noontime show, which was said to have been affected by the emergence of Willie Revillame’s return to noontime with his TV 5’s “Wowowillie.”

Given how thriving “Be Careful” is nowadays, it may be regarded as having the makings of being one of the best among the Kapamilya’s shows up to date.

 

 

Now this should surely come as a cause of concern to “It’s Showtime” hosts, Vice Ganda, Anne Curtis, Vhong Navarro and Billy Crawford, among others as they must change something up to make their show a little more interesting.

With the success of the romantic comedy show and rumored plan to put it on “It’s Showtime” slot soon, will this move end up though as preemptive knowing not how long they’d still be doing well in the ratings? Just asking…

For this post-Valentine feature of 60 Minutes, we decided to veer away from the usual love stories of real-life couples, and instead focus the spotlight on the unique and unlikely on-screen partnership of Jodi Sta. Maria and Richard Yap, who are considered one of the hottest love teams today.

 

The daytime television series “Be Careful with My Heart”, where they play the lead characters Maya Dela Rosa and Richard “Sir Chief” Lim, has been breaking records and setting new trends in noontime television and the viewing habits of Filipinos. The success of the show is attributed to the two characters’ undeniable chemistry that has overshadowed even the most popular young love teams.

To this day, its many fans and followers are hooked on every development in the lives of the two characters as the show exceeds its initial one season target. This is evident in the reactions we got even from our family, friends and co-workers when they learned that we were interviewing “Maya” and “Sir Chief.” Excitement is an understatement. Some screamed their lungs out, others asked if they could come with us, and many asked for fan signs and video greetings. One even fell from her seat.

 

 

The Students and Campuses team saw this chemistry at the interview held at the “Lim household” in Antipolo, on one busy taping day. Jodi, in her flight attendant in-training outfit, and Richard, in blue long sleeves, jeans, and his signature eyeglasses, gamely answered our questions. The seemingly quiet Richard was a revelation as we discovered that he was not as serious as any fan of the show would like to think.

“Nag-aral kasi kaming dalawa ng chemistry,” Richard jokingly says on their on-screen partnership.

“Ang importante naniniwala ka dun sa character mo at sa story. Kasi kung umpisa palang hindi mo pinaniniwalaan, paano mo ‘yun maitatawid sa viewers mo?” Jodi adds.

The show’s phenomenal success has surprised everyone, including the actors themselves. The Maya-Sir Chief pairing now has a huge following, with audiences coming from all ages – from teens to grandmas. Plus, the light, romantic-comedy series showed something no soap opera has done before – no antagonist and less drama.

While Richard, 45 and Maya, 30, say that the connection between them was not instant, it was through the course of taping the show that they have grown closer. Now, after almost eight months of taping, the two have even become good friends.

While they may have some similarities with their characters, these actors come from totally different backgrounds. Jodi Sta. Maria is no stranger to love teams. She started her career in show business through the teen show “Gimik” where she was paired with her first loveteam. But it was in the hit teen drama series ‘Tabing Ilog” in the early 2000 where she was able to develop her talent as a serious young actress through her role “George.” Since then, she has become a household name and one of ABS-CBN’s star talents.

Richard Yap is just a newcomer in the industry. He is a former marketing executive and was first seen in a fast-food restaurant commercial. His first big break was playing the lead role of “Papa Chen” in the teleserye “My Binondo Girl” in 2011. This first stint, which he admits, was also his on-the-job training in acting, was the reason for his soaring popularity. Now, the budding actor is playing the suplado, strict, and conservative businessman in “Be Careful with My Heart,” winning hearts of the audience once again.

In this interview, Jodi and Richard tell us how their unique, modern-day, onscreen love story has been inspiring viewers to see the positive side of life and love.

 

 

 

STUDENTS AND CAMPUSES BULLETIN (SCB): When we first saw the teaser of “Be Careful with My Heart,” we thought it was cute but we had doubts that such a tandem would click with viewers. When the show was pitched to you guys, did you also have the same doubts?

RICHARD YAP (RY): Ako hindi. I like the concept of the show. The first time they showed me the script nagustuhan ko naman kaagad. I said this is nice.

JODI STA MARIA (JSM): Ako naman when they pitched the project, naniwala naman ako dun sa story. Pinipresent pa lang nila ‘yung story, tawa na ako ng tawa. Parang feel good na. Kinukuwento pa lang nila ‘yung magiging character ni Maya, natuwa na ako sa kanya kasi very positive siya.

But at first iniisip ko rin kung magwowork ba ‘yung pairing, ‘yung partnership namin, kasi number one kinonsider ko ‘yung mga ages namin.

RY: Mas matanda kasi siya (laughs).

JSM: (Laughs). Kung magwowork pa ba ‘yung pacute na loveteam na ang gumagawa ngayon ay tipong mga Daniel Padilla at Kathryn Bernardo, diba. Well, nagwork naman diba?

 

 

RY: Siguro.

SCB: Were you surprised na kinagat ng audience ‘yung unlikely love team ninyo?

JSM: Ako na-surprise sa lahat, hindi lang sa loveteam pati dun sa timeslot. Kasi nung nag-umpisa ‘yung show, it was sort of an experiment. Gusto nila i-try kung anong magiging feedback sa mga tao. Mga guinea pig kami (laughs)!

SCB: The fact that your show was placed on the same timeslot with “Eat, Bulaga!,” a tough competitor, says a lot. What do you think the show has that it is now reportedly leading in the ratings in that timeslot?

JSM: Ang hirap magcomment kapag ganun! Siguro, unang-una we offered something new to the audience, to the viewers, hindi ba? Kasi before we came in karamihan ng napapalabas sa television is ‘yung typical na soap opera na mga heavy drama. So I think dahil iba siya, mas light, puro kakiligan at katatawanan pero kapupulutan mo rin ng aral ‘yung show.

RY: Kasi we bring joy, love, and inspiration to all the people who are watching us. They feel inspired after watching the show. They go through the day with smiles on their faces. I think that is one of the main reasons why they like the show so much. They really are entertained by the show. ‘Yun talaga. I think that is the main selling point.

SCB: At what point did you realize that this is going to be big?

 

JSM: Nung nagkaroon na kami agad ng mall show the weekend after the first week of airing “Be Careful with My Heart.” ‘Yun ‘yung gauge ng station para malaman nila kung pinapanood ba, at kung may epekto ‘yung mga characters sa audience. Ako kasi nafeel ko nung first mall show na sinusubaybayan na siya ng mga tao kasi kilala na nila agad ‘yung mga characters dun sa story. Habang tumatagal may mga feedbacks na kaming nakukuha sa Twitter, Facebook, mga texts at kung saan saan pa. Sinusubaybayan nila ‘yung programa dahil maganda, and of course dahil sa positive effect na nadudulot nito sa mga buhay nila.

DEVELOPING THE CHEMISTRY

SCB: Did you know each other before the show?

JSM: Well, napapanood ko si Papa Chen (Richard Yap’s character in “My Binondo Girl”).

RY: By name, but we never met before. When this was pitched to me, they were saying that they’re hoping to get Jodi as Maya. Ako naman for my part, I was hoping na she would accept the offer. Kasi parang feeling ko mas bagay nga siya dun sa role kaysa sa ibang mga pinipili nila.

SCB: How did your wife initially react to the pair-up?

RY: She was very excited about the pair-up kasi alam niya how good Jodi is as an actress. So she was also hoping na si Jodi nga ang mapili for this series. She gave her all-out support for this project.

SCB: What were your impressions of each other when you first met?

JSM: Napapanood ko naman ‘yung “My Binondo Girl” before so iniisip ko na siguro kaya napaka effective niya sa role na Papa Chen kasi baka close ‘yung character sa kung paano siya in real life kaya napoportray niya ng ganun kaayos, at ganun kaeffective. Nung nakilala ko na siya, wala he was just quiet. Una kaming nagkakilala sa workshop.

RY: Pareho kaming silent.

JSM: Siyempre pakiramdaman pa. Hindi naman kami magkakilala diba?

RY: Akala ko seryoso si Jodi.

JSM: Akala namin seryoso ang isa’t isa. Mali pala (laughs).

SCB: Kailan na-break ‘yung ice? During shooting na?

JSM: Nung nagsho-shoot na. Pero nung workshop parang nahihiya, may ilang factor pa.

RY: Parang “Hi, hi” lang, pero hindi kami nagkukuwentuhan.

JSM: Andun kami para gawin namin ‘yung kailangan naming gawin, hindi para sa friendship.

RY: Actually the workshop was more on knowing each other.

JSM: Pero konti lang ‘yung nabigay na time sa amin.

RY: Parang exercise-exercise lang but we really didn’t have a chance to talk. After the workshop, alis na rin kami agad, may kanya-kanya kaming lakad.

SCB: Do you remember the scene that finally made you comfortable with each other?

JSM: Parang lahat naman. Kasi unang salang pa lang namin, kailangan merong titigan nang ganun. Hindi‘yung parang deadma or friends, kailangan ‘yung nainlove na agad. Ganun ‘yung inaasahan agad-agad!

RY: Siguro it was after the first two weeks of the show. Dun na kami medyo mas comfortable with each other. Kasi habang nagte-taping kami, magkasama kami sa set, sa tent, so parati kami nagkukuwentuhan. Parati kaming kumakain together. Iyon ‘yung parati naming pinaguusapan, food!

JSM: Ito kasing sila Papa Chen at Mama Chen (Richard’s wife), mahilig silang magpadala ng pasabog sa set. Kapag sinabing pasabog, pagkain. Mahilig kasi silang dalawa kumain so kapag lunch or dinner break, andami nang food, parang nagtake out na sila.

RY: Dun na siguro nag start.

JSM: Siyempre ako, puwede makihingi? (Laughs) Kapag hindi ko siya pinansin eh di ako naman ang magugutom.

SCB: How did you develop that chemistry? Kasi ‘yung iba kahit anong gawin nila, walang dating sa viewers.

RY: Nag-aral kasi kaming dalawa ng chemistry.

SCB: (Laughs)

JSM: Oh, tingnan niyo, diba ang layo niya sa TV? Huwag kayo palilinlang (laughs). Joke lang!

RY: Pareho kasi kaming nagpre-med.

JSM: Siguro ang importante, naniniwala ka dun sa character mo at sa story. Kasi kung umpisa pa lang hindi mo pinaniniwalaan ‘yung ginagawa mo, paano mo pa ‘yun maitatawid sa viewers mo, hindi ba? At first, iniisip ko paano kaya magagawa ‘yung chemistry nito. Naku, bahala na nga si Batman, basta paniwalaan ko na lang, gagawin ko.

TRENDSETTERS

SCB: What surprising things have you discovered about each other over the course of several months of taping?

RY: Puwede talagang pang comedy si Jodi.

JSM: Uy, hindi ako! Ikaw nga eh. Napaka komikero niya talaga. Ang galing niyang magbato ng punch line. Sabi ko nga ‘yung nakikita niyo sa TV, sobrang iba ‘yun in real life. Pero si Sir Chief kahit napapatawa niya ang buong set, kapag kinausap mo naman siya ng seryoso, may sense naman talaga siya kausap.

RY: (Laughs) Minsan.

SCB: How similar are your characters sa totoong buhay?

RY: Ikaw, parang natural lang sa’yo (laughs).

JSM: Na ano? Na mali-mali?

RY: Hindi, ‘Yung ganun ka lang talaga ka sweet, parang naive, inosente.

JSM: (Laughs) Naks.

RY: Ganun din siya in real life.

SCB: What are your most unforgettable scenes, so far?

RY: Answering the slumbook (laughs).

JSM: (Laughs) Kasi ang haba, four pages kailangan basahin tapos one-liners lang ang sagot.

JSM: Marami eh. Ako gusto ko ‘yung scene na nahulog ako sa pool. Unforgettable para sa akin ‘yun kasi nababad ako ng ilang oras sa tubig.

RY: ‘Yung sa akin ‘yung harana scene kasi nagso-sorry ako sa kanya for the first time.

JSM: Kita niyo naman live ‘yun ah. Alam niyo na maganda ang boses ni Richard Yap.

SCB: How much input do you have with the characters? Sa simula, it’s the writers and directors. Pero habang tumatagal, do you have a say on the characters and how the story progresses?

RY: Meron kaming inputs sa script, pag may nakita na kami na something wrong with the grammar o dapat ganito ang pagkasabi. They accept the comments. Open naman sila with criticisms basta constructive and it’s for the good of the show.

JSM: If you know your character, alam mo ‘yung mga bagay na maaring gawin o hindi gagawin ng character mo. Sasabihin niya ba ‘yung mga ganitong klaseng bagay o hindi? For example, may isang situation na we asked kung bakit ganun? Bakit kailangan gawin ‘yun? Ineexplain naman sa amin. It’s a group effort.

RY: At saka dun sa start ng story, wala pa ‘yung naging FA (flight attendant) si Jodi. Nasa bahay lang. So that’s what we pitched to the writers para mag evolve ‘yung character ni Jodi, mag-elevate siya to a flight attendant.

SCB: By showing that a nanny can evolve and improve herself, the theme of the teleserye went beyond just a mere love story…

RY: Oo, kasi if this was based on “The Nanny” or “Sound of Music,” habang nanny pa siya magiging kami na. But we suggested to add more things for people to look forward to, things para ma inspire din sila like Maya.

JSM: At saka nagseserve siya as inspiration na kung kaya ni Maya, posible rin nilang magawa. Kumbaga dumaan din sa butas ng karayom ‘yung character. Pero sa kanya kasi lahat possible. So in real life, puwede rin mangyari ‘yun.

SCB: When you were starting the show, naisip niyo ba na aabot kayo ng ganito katagal?

JSM: Ako honestly, hindi talaga.

RY: One season lang ang expectation ko.

JSM: Basta ang alam ko nung time na shinoot namin ‘yun,mage-air kami ng July, tapos after 13 weeks tapos na. Hindi namin inexpect or hindi sumagi sa isip namin na aabot kami ng June of 2013.

RY: Kasi we barely had time to prepare for the show. We only had two weeks before we started showing the pilot episode.

JSM: During the trade launch nga, kung ano ‘yung shinoot namin for promo, ‘yun lang ‘yung material na meron kami.

RY: We had to do a one-day shoot for the trade launch. Wala kaming material from the actual shooting kasi hindi pa kami nagstart. So we had to start shooting when they said na you’re going to start airing in two weeks.

JSM: And it was not easy ha, kasi XD cameras ‘yung ginamit, hindi ‘yung usual.

RY: We are the first to use it sa TV.

JSM: We are using C300 na originally ginagamit for film.

RY: And then, ‘yung mga cameramen, they were training for it palang.

JSM: Training while taping.

RY: On-the-job training sila.

SCB: Talagang experiment pala.

JSM: Oo, obvious na obvious. So alam niyo na kung bakit experiment. Literal. Saka iba na rin ‘yung ilaw, ‘yung makeup, lahat. May mga number ng sequences na kailangan matapos sa isang araw pero since lahat nangangapa sa bagong sistema, bagong camera, kalahati lang nun ang natatapos o minsan hindi pa. Hindi madali ‘yung pinagdaanan nung isinisilang ‘yung show.

SCB: Kadalasan pag nag nagrerate ang isang show, pinapahaba kaya nagde-deteriorate ‘yung quality. But with your show, nagtretrend pa rin kayo sa Twitter. What does it have that you are able to maintain the quality and kilig factor?

JSM: Ang masasabi ko dapat talagang i-commend ‘yung mga writers namin. ‘Yung creative team na sobra ‘yung hirap at puyat ‘yung dinadanas to come up with a good episode. Kung minsan iniisip ng mga tao ang kilig serye madaling gawin. But actually mas mahirap nga ‘yung ganun, kung paano mo imemaintain or masusustain ‘yung kilig.

RY: We’re not coming out with big dramatic scenes. We come out with small scenes like the touching of hands, which should also be incorporated. Hindi naman puwedeng maghawakan lang kayo bigla. There has to be a moment.

SCB: Magyakapan nga lang kayo, nagtre-trend na.

JSM: Nung national hug day diba?

SCB: What also makes the show refreshing is there are no villains. May sagabal pero not because they are a bad person.

JSM: Oo, kasi importante sila dun sa itatakbo ng kuwento. Each character na pumapasok ay significant sa story. Hindi lang para mambuwisit sa character na ito o para buwisitin kayong lahat.

Minsan kasi ‘yung mga fans and supporters sobrang affected. Kapag may mga guests na kunyari nakakasagabal sa amin, inaaway na agad nila. So we explain to them kung bakit kailangan ‘yung mga characters na iyon sa kuwento. Kasi siguro nasanay lang din sila na feel good lang lahat.

RY: Kasi it’s a story about the lives of two people who along the way will meet different kinds of people. Hindi naman puwedeng mabait lahat.

SCB: What’s the greatest reaction that you’ve gotten from a fan?

JSM: Siguro ‘yung show na lang na parang kahit gaano kasama ‘yung araw nila, kapag nakakanood sila ng show, they are reminded na it’s just a bad day, not a bad life, parang ganun. Marami kaming tao na napapasaya because of the show.

‘ENJOY LIFE!’

SCB: Richard, you were a marketing executive and commercial model before you entered showbiz. How was that transition? Was it difficult for you?

RY: Wala ‘yung commercial eh, kasi wala namang lines and emotions. There only has to be the look. Dito when we started out, at least I had OJT na sa “My Binondo Girl.”

SCB: (Laughs) OJT talaga?

RY: Oo, ‘yun ang OJT ko. Dun ako pinapagalitan, pinagsasabihan na dapat ganito ginagawa mo. That’s where I learned most of the basics. Tapos dito along the way, tinitingnan ko na rin kung ano ‘yung trabaho ng iba. You learn along the way.

SCB: Jodi, does your son watch the show?

JSM: Yes. Funny nga when you ask him kung ano ‘yung ginagawa ko for a living. Before he says, “You’re an actress, mom.” Now, ang sagot niya, “Yaya ni Abby!”

SCB: What lessons have you learned from doing the show?

RY: You can’t take life too seriously because nobody comes out of it alive.

JSM: Kung si Maya ang magsasabi, siguro enjoy life. She takes each day as it comes.

SCB: Is there something about the show na ikakagulat ng fans?

RY: I don’t think there is any secret.

JSM: Siguro magugulat sila kung gaano kami kakulit sa set (laughs).

SCB: Ano pa ang dapat naming abangan kay Sir Chief at Maya?

RY: I’m sure they’re going to be better friends. Their relationship will get deeper. Baka later on more than friendship.

SCB: Have you ever said to anyone, in any way, to please be careful with my heart?

JSM: We can say that to our friends, to our families, anyone na meron tayong emotional attachment diba? No one wants to get hurt naman.

RICHARD YAP: RELUCTANT HEARTTHROB

Some stars are born. Owing to their pedigree, it would seem that at birth, they were already cut out for showbiz. Some stars are lucky. They join reality shows and talent searches, emerge winners and become an overnight sensation.

And then, there are stars like Cebuano-Chinese Richard Yap, who continues to surprise everyone, maybe including himself, at how swiftly he has become one of the country’s most popular TV personalities. This despite the fact that early on in his showbiz career, he already declared that he is in his 40s, married, with kids. Not “heartthrob” material, by local tinseltown’s standards.

The 45-year-old actor came into the public consciousness as Papa Chen in ABS-CBN’s 2011 hit teleserye “My Binondo Girl” topbilled by another Cebuano-Chinese actor, Kim Chiu.

After a bit role in another top-rating series “Walang Hanggan,” he signed up as the character Richard Lim a.k.a. “Sir Chief” in the daytime kilig-serye “Be Careful with my Heart” opposite Jodi Sta. Maria, who plays Maya.

Seven months after, “Be Careful …” has become the No. 1 daytime show on TV, winning awards, the most recent of which is Gawad Tanglaw’s Best Ensemble Performance award, and has been named a finalist for the Telenovelas category at the 2013 New York Festival’s World’s Best Television & Films competition.

With more than 155,000 followers on Twitter, four fan pages on Facebook (one of them with 112,000 ‘likes’), and several product endorsements to his name, it is safe to say that Richard can slug it out with the younger matinee idols out there.

In this exclusive interview, the proud Cebuano shares details on how his showbiz career started, his musical side, and how he’s dealing with fame.

Can you tell us about your Cebu roots?

Yes, I was born and raised in Cebu. I studied there until second year college. And then I moved to Manila.

How was life like when you weren’t still in showbiz? Like any other ordinary person who’s not in showbiz, after school I graduated. And then I went home to Cebu again for a while and came back to Manila. And like everybody else, I looked for a job. I was working for a furniture company for 20 years. Everything was normal. And on the side, I was doing commercials.

Is this the one with Chowking?

Even before Chowking I was already doing commercials.

Would you consider that as your stepping stone to showbiz?

You could say that they remembered me because of Chowking pero hindi naman because of Chowking (that I got into showbiz). Actually, it’s because ‘yung production manager ng “My Binondo Girl,” ‘yung pinsan niya was my college classmate kaya ako natawag dun.

What made you decide to leave your job in the corporate world and go full-time in showbiz?

I saw this as another opportunity. Well, not many people are offered something like this kasi, especially at this time in your life. And since I was looking for something else to do, I thought that this would be the right move. It’s something different, it’s something I’ve never tried before but I thought that it’s something that I could do. And since the offer was there, it would be unwise for me not to take it.

When the role of Sir Chief was offered to you, did you have any reservations?

For “Be Careful,” wala. Because I felt that this was a good project.

What were your preparations?

We had to do a few workshops before we started the show but this was more on getting to know each other, between me and Jodi Sta. Maria. And by reading the script, getting to know the characters. But you can only get into the character once the story starts ‘eh because that’s when you know the real person.

Jodi Sta. Maria told us in our interview with her that you are actually funny in real life and far from the “serious” Sir Chief that you portray. How similar are you and your character?

’Yung pagka strict, there are times when I am like that, especially when I was working in the corporate world. Meron din times na ganun ako. Or with my kids, when it’s needed that you have to be strict. But I’m not that strict all the time. There’s a funny side to me.

How’s your working relationship with Jodi?

Oh, it’s a joy to be working with her. She’s a very easy person to work with. And she’s very professional. It’s not like work at all.

Which scenes in “Be Careful with my Heart” are the most difficult to do?

Usually, the difficult scenes are the ones where you have to dig into your emotions. Usually, ‘yun ‘yung mga heavy scenes ‘eh. Those are the scenes that I find very hard to do.

How different is your life now that you’re in showbiz?

The difference is that it limits my movement now. I can’t go anywhere I want. Like if I want to go to a mall, hindi na pwede. Kasi, of course you have to look at the crowd, kung marami bang tao dun. Because once you go there, di ka na rin makagalaw nang maayos ‘eh because of the people wanting to take pictures of you. Hindi mo naman maayawan.

How are your kids and wife taking your sudden rise to fame?

They’re very supportive about it. They’ve always known because before everything started I asked them. I asked their permission to join show business.

How do you manage your time between showbiz and family?

Well, as much as possible, if I’m not at work I am with the kids and family. We always make it a point to travel. Or when we have a few days off, we stay together. We’re always together.

You said in previous interviews that you’re giving yourself two years in showbiz. Considering the huge success of “Be Careful,” has this initial plan changed?

Well, it still depends. Because right now “Be Careful” is successful but two years is still a long way to go so we’ll see what happens. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

How often do you get to visit Cebu now?

Once or twice a year lang.

 

 

You sang four songs in the “Be Careful” soundtrack. Which one is your favorite?

I’ve been singing “When You Say Nothing At All” even before the album came out, so I would say that would be my favorite song.

Are there plans to record a solo album?

I don’t know. I’m not sure. Maybe there are plans. Management has plans for me but we’re still in the planning stage pa lang.

If ever the plan pushes through, what kinds of songs will you be recording?

Siguro, classics. Ballads. There are few songs I would like to record but it’s more on the 80s type of songs.

 

Any dream role?

Yeah, of course. I think the ultimate role would be something like a James Bond movie.

And your dream leading ladies?

Marami sila but right now I can think of two—Anne Curtis and Ms. Dawn Zulueta.

Your message to your Cebuano fans.

Yun pala parang lovapalooza where couples kiss tapos countdown na yung host then the couples there kissed. Nahiya si Maya kasi nasa loob sila nung kotse tapos lahat nagkikiss sa labas. Tapos may kumatok sa bintana ni Maya at sabay sabing “MAG-KISS NA RIN KAYO” Si Maya naman hiyang-hiya na at nagtakip ng kamay niya sa mukha tapos si SC pinakita na sobrang kilig sa pagkangiti at parang gusto nang halikan si Maya.

GRABE NA TALAGA SI SC!!! Sobrang indirect pero HALATANG-HALATA na nagpapahaging kay Maya. AS IN!!! Parang he did all those things kasi para magets ni Maya na date na yuuun! Yung itsura niya pa sa dulo, parang gustong-gusto na halikan si Maya!!!

Indirectly stating that he really intended to give the chocolate to Maya, thus indirectly stating as well na DATE nga talaga ang nagyari kasi kumpleto yung requirements niya: flowers, sundo at chocolate.

First scene, nasa porch silang dalawa (sila lang). Sabi ni Maya eh tama daw si Sir Chief na mas okay kapag ang date eh nasa bahay nalang kasi mas relaxed daw. Sabi naman ni SC, mas intimate kasi dalawa lang sila. Sabi ni SC, “kanina pa tayo pinagkakamalang dalawa na on a date so might as well right?. Next scene, pinakita si Maya sa kwarto niya. Kumuha siya ng petal nung rose na binigay ni SC tapos sinulatan niya ng friendly date =)sabay kilig face.

Next scene, kausap ni SC si Rafi tapos nagtanong si Rafi kung may date daw ba si SC. Sabi ni SC “well technically kami ni Maya” Sabi ni Rafi “you hate valentines day” Sabi naman ni SC “not today.” while smiling so sweetly.

Next scene, pinakita si Gemma na nasa may school ni Abby. Naghahanap ng tindahan kasi gusto niya daw uminom ng softdrinks. Pinakita si Abby na hinahanap si Gemma tapos nakita si Kuya Joma sabay tumakbo sa sasakyan. Then may paparating na isa pang kotse (pero wala namang sounds na parang nabangga like the usual teleserye). Pinakita nalang si Maya habang nasa CR ng TA na parang kakabasa lang ng text tapos sabay sabi na “Mauna na ako ha”

No kiss today but another sweet (humming ) and hilarious (Maya’s reaction to all the kissing) moments in the car. I think the kiss will come when unexpectedly. SC saying that he “technically” had a date with Maya to Rafi is another step to their relationship, bagal pa rin.
I’m bothered by the last scene with Abby but that may be the reason she’ll stay.
This show never fails to surprise me. Galing.

 

Parang the accident of Abby will be the deciding factor na siguro for Maya to stay. Ala the choice she had to make between the airport duty and watching over Manang Fe. Hope Maya sees that she can have the best of both worlds if she stays.

 

Yes. What may happen to Abby tomorrow will surely let Maya realize, she’s not ready yet to entrust her alaga to a stranger.
Pero, I don’t think maaksidente si Abby because it will be like the typical drama na and BCWMH is anything but typical.
Siguro possible pa na magulat ng sobra si Abby (trauma ulit) at bumalik naman yung selective mutism niya. Pero i’m hoping na hindi talaga. Mabagal naman yung takbo ng sasakyan.

 

I love the episode today kahit walang kiss.

Pero kilig pa rin kasi di ba parang bwisit itong si ser chief sa valentines day. pero dahil kasama na niya si maya on that day e naiba na ang pananaw niya sa araw na yun. yiiihiiiiii..

Mukhang hindi naman siya masasagasaan or anything. I think yung ganitong near accident is enough para maisip ni Maya na hindi niya pwedeng iwan si Abby sa ibang tao. Family first naman ang motto ni prinsesa kaya I’m sure hindi na siya makakaalis sa mansyon niyan. Consistent naman sa character ni Maya ito saka yung aksidente ay hindi lang basta aksidente na pwedeng ishrug off ng mga tao sa mansyon especially SC and Maya kasi it’s due to Gemma’s irresponsibility.

As long as the writers prepare for it and the story progresses, I think kaya nila talaga until December. There’s so much story to tell. They’ve done an excellent job so far.

With the right brainstorming, they can come up with good stories. Think, How I Met Your Mother. 8 seasons na pero walang kupas. Yun nga lang, weekly lang sila. Ang Pinoy kasi hindi nakaugalian yung weekly series kaya kapag pumatok, super pressured and cast at crew to meet the demands.

 

That’s true. I guess ang pambawi lang ng BCWMH is its not as fast paced as other shows. Hindi kailangang may pasabog every day. Slow and steady. That’s entirely different from being dragging. And I guess the only time the show was dragging was when everyone went on their Christmas holiday.

On another note, I watched the tampuhan episodes leading up to the harana. Ang ganda pala! I’m thinking, it was just too much kasi it went on for weeks. But if you watch it tuloy tuloy, nakakakilig.
I agree na medyo na stretch yung tampuhan pero they recovered with RY’s near flawless harana.

Nakakalungkot ito. di ko lang sure if aiza consulted tvj re: this career move of hers. I think she did consult TVJ making this VERY BIG CAREER move kasi mahal na mahal nya ang mga ito tatay nya ang mga ito. disappointing if tvj readily/swiftly agreed. sana it was aiza’s personal decision. basta,.. this is way too much of aiza giving back or showing her love to eb and tvj.

Bcwmh is not conceptualized to be pitted against EB in the first place. I know EB and tvj will be very proud MORE of her IF SHE STAYS sa BCWMH kasi walang aiza kung walang EB +TVJ. kesa ang ginawa nyang pag alis sa show,.

Oo nga. it shows HOW loyal aiza is to eb and tvj by leaving bcwmh. sobrang noble non. pero IT’S HER career at stake here. her future. yes she’ll have more projects in the future pero walang assurance if it’ll be as successful as bcwmh.

AIZA SEGUERRA is a mainstay in “Be Careful with My Heart” playing the role of Jodi Sta. Maria’s lesbian sister who had a child after one drunken night with Tom Rodriguez. When the show was re-scheduled by ABS-CBN to be a direct competitor of GMA-7’s “Eat Bulaga”, Aiza decided to resign from “Be Careful” even if she enjoys being a part of it.

“Respeto na lang sa ‘Eat Bulaga’ kasi diyan ako nagsimula sa Little Miss Philippines hanggang maging regular ako sa show noong kabataan ko,” she says. “Diyan ako lumaki at malaki ang utang na loob ko kina Bossing Vic Sotto na isinama pa ko sa ‘Okay Ka Fairy Ko’ on at later sa mga pelikula niya. Walang Aiza ngayon kung hindi dahil sa ‘Eat Bulaga’. I’m glad na naiintindihan naman ng ABS ang reason sa pagre-resign ko.”

Bittersweet naman today. Aww. sayang yung Kuteff.  Ano ba naman yan, isa lang sana yung solusyon diyan eh – PRIMETIME. Hitting two birds with one stone:

1. Hindi na conflict sa Eat Bulaga
2. Pwede na mag SPG

 

 

Nakakalungkot. yes abs-cbn accepted it. pero alam ko masakit din ito sa kanila. oo tamang tumanaw ng utang na loob si aiza sa eb pero in her stature now as an artists IT WAS ABS-CBN who gave her a second chance on her career. kung tumatanaw sya ng utang na loob sa eb paano ang utang na loob nya sa abs?

Nakakatampo si aiza. nasabi ko na kahapon na bcwmh is never conceptualized to be pitted against EB in the 1st place. kung noon pa lang before the show aired aware si aiza na itatapat ang bcwmh sa eb kalaunan, dun MAY KARAPATANG MAGALIT O MAGTAMPO at sabihan si aiza na walang utang na loob. pero hindi. it was meant to be a pre-prog sa noontime show ng abs which unfortunately ay talo pa din sa eb, may chamba at times pero wala eh. management decision. at dahil career at future ni aiza ang nakasalalay I’M SURE MAIINTINDIHAN NG EB yan. pero nangyari na eh. goodluck na lang kay aside sa singing career nya. at hindi ko na igugoodluck ang BCWMH kasi sa milyong milyong great/good vibes ng show at dahil sa ating mga adik sa show. … .makakahanap tayo ng new character not ncessarily to replace KUTE but additional character to serve as an inspiration to all of us.

Pero kahit makahanap sila ng ka look-alike ni aiza to replace her as Kute, it wouldn’t be same anymore, meron comparison yan for sure.. Maybe magbabarko nalang sya tapos phone call nalang yung conversation with her pero di na papakita yung character nya.. Pano nga kaya?

I’m with you on this one. May hangganan din yung pambibitin kung kailan mag-bo-bloom yung love affair nung dalawa. I have faith naman na may respeto ang mga writers sa mga die-hard followers ng serye. Di naman siguro nila i-stretch to the max yung story.

Sana mag-develop na ng tuluy-tuloy yung story. Maya will make a beautiful June bride.

Si Yaya Gemma inuna pa ang softdrink.Si Abby pa ang nag-aalala sa Yaya nya kahit muntikan na syang masagasaan. At pasalamat ka Gemma walang masamang nangyari kay Abby pero magtago ka na girl dahil lagot ka sa tatay nya.

Sir Chief, priority ang pamilya

Hindi pa sure si Richard Yap (aka Sir Chief ng Be Careful with My Heart) kung matutuloy ‘yung binabalak na movie version ng nasabing hit kiligserye ng ABS-CBN.

Sey ni Sir Chief nang huli namin siyang makatsika, wala pang detalye ang nasabing pelikula at plano pa lang ito.

Handa na ba siyang mag-movie ‘pag natuloy ito?

“Why not?” nakangiting sagot ng tsinitong Kapamilya heartthrob.

Ang alam niya ay continuation ng Be Careful… ‘yung gagawing pelikula, pero completely different dahil tipong what happens next sa kanila ni Maya dela Rosa (yaya karakter ni Jodi Sta. Maria).

Excited ba siya na movie naman ang gagawin nila ni Jodi?

“I don’t know. Kasi, it’s something new for me again. Well siyempre, anything new is exciting,” ani Richard.

Hanggang Hunyo ang taping nila ng nasabing serye at hanggang Hulyo ang airing nila. Nag-start sila ng Hulyo last year, so bale isang taon ang show nila.

Thankful si Sir Chief sa tuluy-tuloy na trabaho. Hindi nila alam na magiging hit ito dahil experimental lang dapat ang BCWMH pero nag-work ito.

Dati ay nakilala siya bilang si Papa Chen (ng My Binondo Girl), tapos ngayon ay mas sumikat pa siya bilang si Sir Chief.

Ano bang meron sa kanya at nagmamarka ‘yung mga karakter na ginagampanan niya?

“Siguro ano, someone told me that what I’m doing is underacting. Which is different from others na overacting naman. So, mas gusto siguro ng ibang tao ‘yung gano’n.

“From the feedback I get, sabi nila, kahit na walang masyadong actions, they can see the emotions. So hopefully, ‘yun ang nakikita ng mga tao,” sabi ng 45-anyos na Chinese Cebuano.

Nakakatuwa ang wife ni Richard na si Melody dahil very supportive ito sa kanyang career. Ito pa ang nagsasabi sa kanya na mag-toothbrush muna siya o mag-mouthwash bago makipag-kissing scene.

“Walang problema sa kanya because she knows that what I’m doing is work, eh. We’ve been married for 19 years. We’ve been together for 23 years and we have two kids; girl and boy.”

16-anyos ang panganay nilang babae at 9-anyos ang bunsong lalaki.

May yaya rin ba sa totoong buhay ang mga anak niya?

“Yes, may isang yaya kami. Kasama namin sa bahay.”

Maganda rin ba ito gaya ni Yaya Maya?

“Ha! Ha! Ha! May itsura naman.”

Mapili rin ba siya sa yaya, katulad ni Sir Chief?

“Ay, hindi. Ha! Ha! Ha! Hindi ko naman tinitingnan sila based on their looks, eh. Ha! Ha! Ha!” tawa niya.

Dating FA sa Philippine Airlines ang misis niyang si Melody. Matagal na itong tumigil sa trabaho para alagaan ang kanilang pamilya. Nagnenego-negosyo ito.

Ano kayang feeling ng misis ni Sir Chief ngayong ang daming nagkaka-crush sa kanya dahil sa tagumpany ng kiligserye nila ni Jodi?

“Wala naman sa kanya ‘yon. She knows that it’s part of the job. At saka I think she’s secure enough to know na it’s just a crush,” nakangiting pakli ni Richard.

Alam ng misis niya na hindi siya magloloko, gano’n?

“Siguro. Ha! Ha! Ha!”

Never ba siyang nagloko ever?

“Well, as of now, alam niya na there’s nothing going on and ano… so, she trusts me.”

Sa 23 years nila ni Melody, hindi siya kailanman nagloko?

“Siya ang tanungin mo. Ha! Ha! Ha!”

Pero secure naman si Mama Chen (tawag sa wife niya)?

“Yes, of course. Kasi I think, it’s trust that makes the marriage work, eh. Kaya we’ve lasted so long together, kasi we trust each other.”

Siya ba ‘yung tipo na hindi madaling matukso? Lalo na ngayon na hot na hot siya sa fans?

“Siguro kasi, at my age, I already know what my priorities are, which is my family. And I’m here because of work. I’m not here because naghahanap ako ng iba.

“Siguro mga ano lang, siyempre you get attracted with their beauty. Pero not to the point na you put youself in a position na mate-tempt ka.”

So, malakas ang kontrol niya sa temtasyon?

“I think so. Pero hindi ko naman kasi iniisip na gano’n. More on work lang talaga,” sambit pa ng family man na si Sir Chief.
