My phone rings making me jump. Then I relax when I see it’s only Richard.

“Hey, honey. Where have you been? You left for Stephanie’s hours ago,” I say upon answering.

“Maya,” he says and from that one word alone, I can hear anguish and pain.

“What’s wrong? Where are you?” I ask, rising to my feet.

“I don’t know. I just kept driving and now my car’s out of fuel and I’m in the middle of nowhere.”

He almost sounds high.

“What? Are you ok? Why didn’t you just call Joma?” I asked him worriedly. He’s silent on the phone but I hear him breathing heavily.

“I’ll come, just send me your location and I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
