Tahimik ang bahay, pero ramdam ni Maya ang bigat ng araw.
Bella sat on the edge of the guest bed, clutching her backpack like it was the only thing she owned.

“Bella, anak… if you need anything, just call us, ha?” Maya said softly.

Richard stood by the door, watching the girl try to be brave.
“Thank you po,” Bella whispered. “I’m not used to… this. People being kind.”

And when the lights turned off, Maya heard it —
a quiet sob, muffled by a pillow.

Richard looked at her, eyes heavy.

This wasn’t just a visitor.
This was a child who had nowhere else to go.

The guest room was warm, softly lit, and freshly prepared — but Bella stood in the doorway as if she didn’t know whether she was allowed to enter.

Maya gently touched her shoulder.
“Bella, this room is yours for now. You’re safe here.”

Bella nodded, but her eyes darted around the room — the neatly folded blankets, the small lamp, the framed photo of the Lim family on the dresser.
It was all too much.
Too unfamiliar.
Too kind.

She sat on the edge of the bed, clutching her backpack tightly.
Richard noticed.

“Bella,” he said softly, “you don’t have to be afraid. We’re here.”

She looked up at him, eyes shining with unshed tears.
“Sir… I’m not used to people helping me. My mom and I… we always handled things alone.”

Maya’s heart cracked a little.
She knelt beside Bella, brushing a stray hair from the girl’s face.

“You don’t have to handle things alone anymore.”

Bella swallowed hard.
“Thank you po.”

Later that night, when the lights were off and the house had settled into silence, Maya paused outside the guest room.
She heard it — a soft, muffled sob.

She opened the door quietly.

Bella was curled up under the blanket, hugging her backpack like a lifeline, tears soaking the pillow.

Maya sat beside her and gently rubbed her back.
“Shhh… it’s okay. You’re safe. You’re not alone.”

Bella didn’t speak.
She just cried — quietly, painfully — until exhaustion pulled her into sleep.

Richard stood at the doorway, watching them, his chest tight.

“This child…” he whispered, “she’s been carrying too much.”

Maya nodded.
“And now… we carry it with her.”

To be continued…
