Title: The Unexpected Wingman
Series: Moments in the City — Story 10
The convenience store was unusually busy for a Saturday afternoon.
Ava just wanted chips and iced tea — nothing dramatic, nothing complicated.
But the universe had other plans.
She turned the corner toward the snack aisle…
and almost tripped over a tiny human.
A little boy — maybe four years old — stood in the middle of the aisle, holding a chocolate bar like it was treasure.
“Oh! Sorry,” Ava said, steadying herself.
The boy looked up at her with big, curious eyes.
“You’re pretty,” he announced.
Ava blinked.
“Oh. Thank you?”
Before she could react, a man rushed over.
“Eli! You can’t run off like that—”
He stopped when he saw her.
And she stopped when she saw him.
Tall.
Warm eyes.
Soft smile.
The kind of face that made you forget what you were supposed to be doing.
“Sorry about him,” he said. “He’s… fast.”
Ava laughed.
“It’s okay. He’s cute.”
Eli beamed.
“See, Tito? She likes me.”
The man sighed.
“I’m Mateo. This is my nephew, Eli.”
“Ava,” she said, smiling.
Eli tugged on Mateo’s sleeve.
“Tito, can she be your girlfriend?”
Mateo choked.
Ava nearly dropped her chips.
“Eli—no—” Mateo sputtered.
Eli crossed his arms.
“Why not? She’s pretty. And you’re lonely.”
Mateo turned red.
Ava covered her mouth to hide her laugh.
“I’m so sorry,” Mateo said. “He’s… brutally honest.”
“It’s fine,” Ava said, still laughing. “Kids say the funniest things.”
⭐ THE ACCIDENTAL MATCHMAKING
Ava reached for a bag of chips on the top shelf — but it was just out of reach.
Mateo noticed.
“Here,” he said, grabbing it easily. “Let me.”
“Thanks,” she said.
Eli watched them with narrowed eyes, like a tiny detective.
“You’re helping her,” he said. “That means you like her.”
Mateo groaned.
“Ava, I swear I’m not coaching him.”
Ava laughed.
“I believe you.”
They walked toward the counter together — Ava, Mateo, and Eli skipping between them like he was escorting his future aunt.
At the register, Eli tugged on Ava’s hand.
“Do you like my Tito?” he asked loudly.
Ava froze.
Mateo froze.
The cashier looked entertained.
Ava cleared her throat.
“He seems… nice.”
Eli gasped dramatically.
“Tito! She likes you!”
Mateo covered his face with one hand.
“I’m never taking you shopping again.”
⭐ THE MOMENT OUTSIDE
They stepped out of the store, the afternoon sun warm and soft.
Ava turned to Mateo.
“Your nephew is… something else.”
Mateo sighed.
“He’s a menace. A cute menace. But still a menace.”
Ava smiled.
“He’s sweet. And he clearly adores you.”
Mateo looked at her — really looked — and something softened in his expression.
“Thanks,” he said quietly.
Eli tugged on Ava’s shirt.
“Ate Ava?”
“Yes?”
“Can we see you again?”
Ava blinked.
“Oh—um—”
Mateo looked mortified.
“Eli—”
But Ava smiled.
“I wouldn’t mind.”
Mateo’s eyes widened slightly.
“You… wouldn’t?”
She shook her head.
“No. I wouldn’t.”
Eli clapped his hands.
“YAY! Tito, ask for her number!”
Mateo groaned.
“Oh my god.”
Ava laughed.
“It’s okay. He’s right.”
Mateo blinked.
“He is?”
She nodded.
“Yeah. He is.”
Mateo swallowed, suddenly shy.
“Okay then… can I have your number?”
Ava smiled — warm, genuine, hopeful.
“Yes.”
She typed her number into his phone.
Eli cheered like they’d won a championship.
Mateo shook his head.
“I swear he’s not usually like this.”
Ava winked.
“Maybe he just knows a good match when he sees one.”
Mateo’s cheeks turned pink.
“Then… can I see you again? Without the tiny wingman?”
Ava laughed.
“I’d like that.”
Eli grabbed both their hands.
“YAY! You’re gonna be my Tita Ava!”
Mateo groaned.
Ava laughed.
And somehow,
in the middle of a convenience store parking lot,
something new began.
