⭐ FB VERSION (Short Teaser)
THE SHARED UMBRELLA
It was raining too hard.
She didn’t have an umbrella.
He did.
And when he stepped beside her and said,
“Come on. I’ll walk you,”
she didn’t expect her heart to react the way it did.
Sometimes,
sharing an umbrella
means sharing a moment you’ll never forget.

Title: The Shared Umbrella
Series: Moments in the City — Story 11
The rain came down in sheets — loud, relentless, soaking the entire street in seconds.
Mara stood under the tiny roof of the bus stop, hugging her tote bag, watching the storm swallow the sidewalk.
She checked her phone.
Bus delayed. 18 minutes.
She groaned.
“Seriously? Eighteen?”
Her blouse was damp.
Her hair was frizzing.
Her patience was evaporating.
She didn’t notice someone approaching until a shadow fell beside her.
“You okay?”
She turned.
A guy stood there — tall, holding a large black umbrella, rain dripping from his jacket.
He looked familiar, but she couldn’t place him.
“I’m fine,” she said. “Just… wet.”
He smiled.
“Yeah. The weather’s brutal today.”
She nodded.
Then he added,
“You’re Mara, right?”
She blinked.
“Do I… know you?”
He laughed softly.
“Not really. But we take the same bus every morning. You usually sit by the window.”
Her cheeks warmed.
“Oh. Right. Sorry. I’m terrible with faces.”
“I’m Ben,” he said. “The guy who always drops his earphones.”
She laughed.
“Oh! That’s you.”
He grinned.
“Yep. That’s me.”
⭐ THE OFFER
The rain intensified, slamming against the pavement.
Ben looked at her, then at the storm.
“You’re going to freeze if you wait here.”
“I don’t have much choice,” she said.
He hesitated — then held out his umbrella.
“Come on. I’ll walk you to Brew & Bloom. It’s warm inside. And dry.”
Mara blinked.
“Oh—no, no, I can’t make you do that.”
“You’re not making me,” he said gently. “I’m offering.”
She hesitated.
He tilted the umbrella toward her.
“Please? You look like you need saving.”
She laughed — the same line Adrian once used on Mia in Story #1.
“Okay,” she said. “Let’s go.”
⭐ THE WALK
They stepped into the rain — close, almost shoulder to shoulder, the umbrella barely big enough for two.
Mara tried to keep distance, but Ben shifted the umbrella toward her.
“You’re getting wet,” she said.
“I’m fine,” he replied. “You’re shorter. You need more coverage.”
She rolled her eyes.
“Wow. Height discrimination.”
He laughed.
“Sorry. It’s true.”
They walked slowly, the rain pounding around them, the city lights reflecting off puddles.
“So,” Ben said, “you work in the office district?”
“Yeah. Marketing. You?”
“IT. Same building as Theo, I think.”
Mara raised an eyebrow.
“You know Theo?”
“Not personally. But I’ve seen him around. He’s always with that girl… Mia?”
Mara smiled.
“Yeah. They’re cute.”
Ben nodded.
“They are.”
He glanced at her.
“You… look cold.”
She shivered.
“A little.”
Without thinking, he moved closer, angling the umbrella more over her.
“Better?”
She swallowed.
“Yeah. Thanks.”
⭐ THE MOMENT UNDER THE AWNING
They reached Brew & Bloom, the warm lights glowing through the windows.
Ben stopped under the awning.
“You made it,” he said.
Mara smiled.
“Thanks to you.”
He shrugged.
“Happy to help.”
She hesitated.
“Do you… want to come in? For coffee?”
Ben blinked.
“Oh—uh—are you sure?”
She nodded.
“It’s the least I can do.”
He smiled — slow, warm, hopeful.
“I’d like that.”
They stepped inside.
Hana looked up from the counter.
“Oh! You two look like you survived a typhoon.”
Ben laughed.
“Feels like it.”
Mara ordered a hot chocolate.
Ben ordered a cappuccino.
They sat by the window — the same spot where Adrian and Hana once talked, where Noah and Hana had their first coffee, where Marco and Sienna dried off after the rain.
Mara wrapped her hands around her cup.
“Thank you,” she said softly. “For the umbrella. For walking with me.”
Ben looked at her — really looked — and his voice softened.
“Anytime.”
She felt her heart flutter.
⭐ THE ALMOST‑ASK
When the rain finally slowed, Mara stood.
“I should head home.”
Ben nodded, standing too.
“Yeah. Me too.”
They walked to the door.
Ben hesitated — then said:
“Mara?”
She turned.
“Yeah?”
He swallowed.
“Would it be weird if I asked to walk you again sometime? Even when it’s not raining?”
Her breath caught.
“No,” she said softly. “It wouldn’t be weird.”
He smiled — relieved, bright, boyish.
“Then… can I?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
He grinned.
“Great. Then I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“See you tomorrow, Ben.”
She stepped into the cool, post‑rain air — warm in a way that had nothing to do with the weather.
