Title: When He Waited in the Parking Lot
Series: Moments in the City — Season 2, Story 2
The office parking lot was always quiet at night — too quiet.
The kind of quiet that made Ava walk faster, clutch her bag tighter, and wish she didn’t work late so often.
But for the past three weeks…
she wasn’t alone.
He was there.
Liam.
Tall.
Calm.
Soft‑spoken.
Always leaning against his car like he had nowhere else to be.
He never said he was waiting for her.
He never made it obvious.
He never crossed a line.
He just… stayed.
Every night.
Same spot.
Same quiet presence.
Same gentle nod when she walked out.
Ava pretended not to notice.
Pretended she didn’t feel safer because of him.
Pretended she didn’t look forward to seeing him.
But tonight felt different.
She stepped out of the building, tired and drained.
Liam straightened immediately.
“You’re late,” he said softly.
Ava blinked. “You’re still here?”
He shrugged casually. “Just passing by.”
She raised a brow. “Passing by… at 10:47 PM?”
He froze.
Caught.
Ava walked closer. “Liam… why are you really here?”
He looked away, rubbing the back of his neck — a nervous habit she’d seen a few times.
“I didn’t want to say anything,” he murmured. “I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable.”
“Uncomfortable?” she repeated.
He nodded. “Yeah. I didn’t want you to think I was… I don’t know… hovering.”
Ava’s heart softened.
“Liam,” she said gently, “you’re not hovering.”
He exhaled — slow, relieved.
She stepped closer. “Tell me the truth.”
He hesitated.
Then finally said it.
“I stay because I feel better when I know you’re safe.”
Ava’s breath caught.
He continued, voice lower now. “You walk out alone every night. And this parking lot… it’s not exactly friendly. So I just… stay. Until you leave.”
Ava didn’t know what to say.
No one had ever done something like that for her.
Not quietly.
Not consistently.
Not without expecting anything in return.
She swallowed. “You don’t have to do that.”
“I know,” he said. “But I want to.”
Her chest tightened — warm, soft, unexpected.
“Liam…”
He looked at her, eyes gentle. “If you want me to stop, I will.”
She shook her head. “I don’t want you to stop.”
He blinked — surprised, hopeful.
Ava smiled. “I like knowing you’re here.”
Liam’s shoulders relaxed, tension melting away.
“Okay,” he whispered. “Then I’ll stay.”
They stood there for a moment — the quiet night wrapping around them, the soft glow of the streetlights making everything feel strangely intimate.
Ava took a breath. “Do you… want to walk me to my car?”
Liam’s lips curved into a small, shy smile.
“I’d like that.”
He walked beside her — not too close, not too far — just enough to make her feel safe.
When they reached her car, she turned to him.
“Thank you,” she said softly.
“For what?”
“For caring.”
Liam looked at her — really looked — and she felt her heart flutter.
“I’ll be here tomorrow,” he said.
Ava smiled. “I know.”
As she drove away, she glanced at him in the mirror.
Still standing there.
Still watching to make sure she left safely.
Still quietly protecting her.
And for the first time in a long time…
Ava didn’t feel alone.
