Title: The Almost Kiss at 11:59 PM

Series: Moments in the City — Story 12

The city plaza was packed — music blaring, lights flashing, people cheering as the countdown to midnight approached.

But Talia wasn’t feeling festive.

She stood near the edge of the crowd, hugging her scarf tighter, trying to ignore the cold and the noise.

She’d come with friends…

but they’d disappeared into the sea of people.

“Great,” she muttered. “Happy New Year to me.”

Then someone tapped her shoulder.

“You okay?”

She turned.

A guy stood there — tall, wearing a navy jacket, cheeks pink from the cold.

He looked familiar, but she couldn’t place him.

“I’m fine,” she said. “Just… alone.”

He nodded.

“Same.”

She blinked.

“You’re alone too?”

He laughed softly.

“Yeah. My friends ditched me for free champagne.”

She smiled.

“Sounds about right.”

He extended a hand.

“I’m Ryan.”

“Talia.”

“Nice to meet you, Talia‑who‑is-also-alone-on-New-Year’s.”

She rolled her eyes.

“Why does everyone say that to me?”

He grinned.

“Maybe you look like someone who deserves company.”

Her cheeks warmed.

⭐ THE CROWD GETS LOUDER

The music swelled.

People shouted.

Fireworks crackled in the distance.

Talia winced.

Ryan noticed.

“You don’t like crowds?”

“Not really.”

“Want to get out of here?”

She hesitated.

He added quickly,

“Not far. Just… over there.”

He pointed to a quieter spot under a streetlamp, away from the chaos.

She nodded.

“Okay.”

They walked together, weaving through the crowd until they reached the quieter corner.

The noise softened.

The lights dimmed.

The world felt smaller — in a good way.

⭐ THE MOMENT UNDER THE STREETLAMP

Ryan exhaled.

“Much better.”

Talia nodded.

“Yeah. Thank you.”

He leaned against the lamppost, hands in his pockets.

“So,” he said, “do you have any New Year’s resolutions?”

She laughed.

“Survive?”

He grinned.

“Reasonable.”

“What about you?” she asked.

He looked at her — really looked — eyes warm, thoughtful.

“I want to be braver,” he said softly.

She tilted her head.

“Braver how?”

He swallowed.

“Braver with moments like this.”

Her breath caught.

“What moment?” she whispered.

He stepped closer — slowly, carefully — until they were inches apart.

“This one.”

⭐ 11:58 PM

The crowd roared in the distance.

Talia’s heart pounded.

Ryan’s breath was warm in the cold air.

She whispered,

“Ryan…”

He whispered back,

“Talia…”

Their hands brushed —

just a touch —

but enough to send a spark up her arm.

He leaned in slightly.

She didn’t move away.

⭐ 11:59 PM

The countdown began.

TEN!

The crowd screamed.

Ryan’s eyes flicked to her lips.

NINE!

Talia’s breath hitched.

EIGHT!

He leaned in.

SEVEN!

She closed her eyes.

SIX!

Their foreheads touched.

FIVE!

His hand found hers.

FOUR!

She squeezed back.

THREE!

He whispered, “Can I—”

TWO!

She whispered, “Yes—”

ONE!

A group of strangers bumped into them, laughing and cheering.

Talia stumbled.

Ryan caught her.

They both burst into laughter — breathless, flustered, warm.

⭐ MIDNIGHT

Fireworks exploded overhead.

Ryan looked at her, cheeks pink, eyes soft.

“Almost,” he said.

Talia smiled.

“Almost,” she echoed.

He hesitated — then held out his hand.

“Can I try again? Without the countdown?”

She took his hand.

“Yes.”

He leaned in — slow, gentle, certain —

and kissed her under the glow of the streetlamp

as fireworks lit up the sky.
