THE JOURNAL

Pag-uwi nila, Bella opened her backpack and pulled out something wrapped in cloth.

“Maya… I found this in my mom’s things.”

It was a journal — old, worn, filled with memories.

Bella opened to the first page.
Her mother’s handwriting.
Her mother’s voice.

And one line stood out:

“If anything happens to me… find Dr. Richard Lim. He will protect you.”

Bella’s tears fell silently.

Now she understood why she was here.

That evening, after the school program, the Lim household was warm and lively. Everyone congratulated Bella, and Maya prepared her favorite merienda. But Bella seemed distracted — thoughtful, quiet.

Later, when the house settled down, she approached Maya.

“Tita Maya… may ipapakita po ako.”

She pulled out a small cloth-wrapped bundle from her backpack.
Her hands trembled slightly.

Maya sat beside her.
“What is it, anak?”

Bella unwrapped it slowly.

A journal.
Old.
Edges frayed.
Cover faded.

“My mom’s,” Bella whispered. “I found it when I was packing my things.”

Maya’s heart tightened.
“Do you want to read it together?”

Bella nodded.

They opened to the first page.

Day 1 — Lim Foundation Program
I met Dr. Richard Lim today. He was kind. He treated me with respect. He didn’t look at me like I was poor or hopeless. He looked at me like I mattered.

Bella’s eyes filled with tears.

They flipped to another page.

Bella is growing so fast. I want her to have a better life than mine. If anything happens to me… I hope she finds Dr. Lim. He is the only person I trust to guide her.

Bella covered her mouth, trying not to cry.

Maya wrapped an arm around her.
“Oh, Bella…”

Bella leaned into her, sobbing softly.
“She trusted him so much… she trusted all of you.”

Maya kissed the top of her head.
“And we will honor that trust. Always.”

Richard entered the room quietly, noticing the journal.

“Is that…?”

Bella nodded.
“My mom wrote about you, Sir. She said you were the reason she survived. She said… you were the kindest person she ever met.”

Richard sat beside them, emotion tightening his voice.
“Your mother was brave. And she loved you more than anything.”

Bella looked at him, eyes shining.
“I know. And now… I know why she sent me here.”

The three of them sat together — connected by loss, love, and a promise made years ago.
